20+ Beautiful & Magical Tree Tunnels You Should Take a Walk Through

Nature in as a whole tends to be a profoundly beautiful thing, but there are few things more magical than finding yourself under a canopy of trees in a tree tunnel on some warm summer evening. Whether they’re formed naturally, accidentally, or with a little help from some patient and talented gardeners, these tree tunnels are sure to enchant anyone lucky enough to walk below their verdant boughs.

The beautiful forms of many of these tree tunnels and the ways in which we’ve copied them goes to show just how much we’ve borrowed from nature. I’m sure that magical spaces like these inspired more than one historical architect to design the gorgeous vaulted ceiling of a gothic cathedral or the arches of some other grand structure. Many ancient societies considered trees to be sacred and maintained holy groves of old trees, and with places this beautiful, it’s not hard to understand why.

Despite how slowly trees grow, they are remarkably receptive to various methods of altering their growth. With strong, persistent and very patient force, trees can be sculpted into a variety of forms. Some of these tree tunnels have been formed and sculpted by careful gardeners to ensure that they conform with their urban surroundings.

A few of the tree tunnels are happy coincidences. The Tunnel of Love in Ukraine, a popular photo spot for married couples, is also part of an operational railway system. The married couples have to schedule their photoshoots behind the times when freight trains are scheduled to pass through. Even unintentionally, these tree tunnels can work their magic on us.

Photographer Captures Aquarium Fish Like Never Before

A 48-year-old Thai photographer Visarute Angkatavanich captures a beautiful aquatic art portraying Siamese fighting fish (Betta Splendens) in a different way. Against stark contrasts of white and black backgrounds, he creates fantastic photos of these animals using crystalline aquariums, powerful lenses and spectacular lighting. The effect is truly magnificent transforming the fish into magical creatures as though they were hovering in the air instead of water.

After 20 years of working in the commercial field, the artist started the ornamental fish project that was inspired by the memories of his own childhood pet fish. These pieces of art have become a huge success on the Internet, primarily within the gallery of Betta Splends. Although, a greater notoriety came later when the images were introduced in the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus models as wallpapers.

This project allowed me to continue my artistic research to find new aesthetic designs and colour palettes. Colourful lights are made with coloured filter.”

Volcanic Eruptions Seen from Space

A volcano is an opening, or rupture, in a planet’s surface or crust, which allows hot magma, volcanic ash and gases to escape from the magma chamber below the surface.

They are generally found where tectonic plates are diverging or converging. A mid-oceanic ridge, for example the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, has examples of volcanoes caused by divergent tectonic plates pulling apart; the Pacific Ring of Fire has examples of volcanoes caused by convergent tectonic plates coming together. Volcanoes can also form where there is stretching and thinning of the Earth’s crust in the interiors of plates.

There is no consensus among volcanologists on how to define an “active” volcano. The lifespan of a volcano can vary from months to several million years, making such a distinction sometimes meaningless when compared to the lifespans of humans or even civilizations.

Scientists usually consider a volcano to be erupting or likely to erupt if it is currently erupting, or showing signs of unrest such as unusual earthquake activity or significant new gas emissions. Most scientists consider a volcano active if it has erupted in the last 10,000 years (Holocene times). There are about 1500 active volcanoes in the world – the majority along the Pacific Ring of Fire – and around 50 of these erupt each year. An estimated 500 million people live near active volcanoes. It’s easy to lose perspective in our day-to-day. To get stuck in the minutia and forget that we’re part of something much bigger called the Earth, which is part of something much bigger called the solar system, which is part of something MUCH bigger called the Milky Way galaxy… you get the picture.

But while the vastness of the universe is difficult to truly capture in a photograph, the vastness of our little pale blue dot is a bit easier to place in perspective given some help from an airplane, helicopter, or hot air balloon.

Each of the 23 images below are from the 500px Prime archives does just that: puts things in perspective. Or, if you prefer a less philosophical approach to your photography, they’re very pretty pictures taken from high up. Either way, we hope you enjoy!
